The Kiwanis Club of Waynesville
Chaired Commitees

Standing Committees

Fundraising
This new committee, a result of the club's goal setting, is reviewing the best ways to raise funds to meet the needs of the club's projects. Previously we have used a golf tournament to supplement our fundraising needs.

Grants
The Grants committee, chaired by the Vice President, arranges for a news item in the local newspaper that says the Kiwanis Club is receiving applications for grant money from our projects funds. The committee prepares and distributes the grant application forms, receives and reviews the applications, and recommends to the Board of Directors which applications should be granted. Grants are limited to those organizations that serve the youth and children of Haywood County . There is normally $6,000 to $7,500 available for grants each year.

House Committee
The House Committee keeps up with the banners, name tags and and generally prepares the room for each meeting, then returns items to storage after the meeting. It also provides greeters for meetings.

Interclub
An Interclub is defined as a meeting where at least four members of one club attend the regular meeting of another Kiwanis Club. Most clubs set a goal to have an Interclub visit with at least every other club in the same Division. The Waynesville Club routinely meets this goal. Interclub visits foster goodwill among the area Kiwanis Clubs.

International Understanding
This committee seeks to promote International Understanding by emphasizing the international character of Kiwanis International. The committee will seek to form a relationship with a Kiwanis Club in another nation in addition to other emphases.

Membership Growth and Education
This committee creates a growth plan for the club and provides orientation for new members.

Program Committee
Every member of the Kiwanis Club is considered a member of this committee. The Chairman, who is always the President-Elect, asks each member to secure at least one program each year. The member who secures the program will normally introduce the speaker at the meeting and assist the speaker as needed.

Projects Committee
This new committee, resulting from club goal setting, is reviewing hands-on projects for the club with emphasis on children.

Scholarships
One or two scholarships are given each year to graduating seniors at Tuscola and/or Central Haywood High Schools through the Haywood County School Foundation.

Spiritual Aims
This committee schedules someone to give the invocation at each regular weekly meeting, sends cards in case of illness or death in a member's family, and plans and conducts the annual Prayer Breakfast in May. This committee may also plans other activities such as a prayer breakfast near the day observed as the National Day of Prayer.

Project Committees

Bar-be-cue
The annual Bar-be-cue is our largest fund raiser. It provides much of the money for the Grants program. It is held in early October. The food is catered but Kiwanis members do all the advance preparation, sell tickets, set-up the site, operate the serving line and deliver meals to businesses or other groups that request delivery. This is a big, labor intensive project that requires the involvement of more club members than any other project.

Child Car Safety Seats (District-wide Project initiated in 2003)
The Car Seat Safety program includes raising funds for new car seats, publicity, and a club-wide supported event (February) where seat checks, inspections and installations are completed for families with children. This included giving replacement, certified seats to deserving families free or for minimal charge. We partnered with the Safe Kids Coalition in Haywood County which included the Health Department, law enforcement, emergency services and Wal-Mart. We are no longer active with this project.

Christmas Parade
The Kiwanis Club and the Downtown Waynesville Association jointly sponsor the annual Christmas parade through downtown Waynesville. It is held on the second Monday after Thanksgiving and usually consists of about 120 units.

Flags
The Kiwanis Club sells a flag service to businesses in the area. For $40 per year the club supplies the American flags and the labor to display them early in the morning and take them down in the evening on National Holidays. Flags are stored in a building in East Street Park that is known as the Scout Hut or the Flag Shack. Members work in teams of two or more and are assigned to one of five “flag routes” by the committee chairman. Profits are used to fund the Grants program.
